In a recent Safety and Health Information Bulletin (SHIB), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommended employers adopt the use of safety helmets over conventional hard hats for head protection in potentially hazardous work environments. While hard hats provide a basic level of protection, safety helmets that incorporate advanced materials enhance impact resistance and reduce the overall weight, include chin straps, and often allow for additional safety features such as face shields or goggles. Employers must conduct a hazard assessment at their job sites to determine whether and which head protection is appropriate. For information on recommended uses and storage of headgear, see SHIB 11-22-2023.
