Emotional Intelligence Among the Keys to Leadership

ES&A Professional Development Director Arlene Odagiri spoke at the 1st Annual Leading with Excellence Conference for University of Hawaii academic leaders, held August 7-8 at the UH Manoa campus. Odagiri’s presentation, titled “What Makes a Leader: Emotional Intelligence and the Keys to High Performance,” discussed:

• the value of emotional intelligence (EI): knowing yourself, and managing yourself, so that you can have empathy and the ability to manage others
• the ability to consistently maintain inner focus, outer focus and “other focus” while managing multi-generational workforces
• communicating across the generation gaps
• bridging the skills gap

The conference also featured sessions on succession planning, communication strategies, teambuilding, EEO issues, investigations, as well as internal processes and policies.
