EEOC Updates Strategic Enforcement Plan
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced that it has approved an updated Strategic Enforcement Plan (SEP) for fiscal year 2017-2021. The new SEP builds upon the agency’s 2013-2016 SEP, with the addition of the following new areas of interest, including:
- issues related to complex employment relationships in the 21st century workplace, such as temporary workers, independent contractors, and gig economy workers;
- backlash discrimination against those who are Muslim or Sikh, or persons of Arab, Middle Eastern or South Asian descent; and
- the increased use of big data — and its potentially discriminatory role —in the hiring and recruitment process as well as in pay practices
